Former President Goodluck Jonathan has lauded the contributions of former military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) to Nigeria’s development, describing him as one of the country’s most charismatic leaders.
Jonathan made the remarks on Thursday at the launch of Babangida’s memoir, ‘A Journey in Service’, and the inauguration of the IBB Presidential Library in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, which was attended by dignitaries from Nigeria and beyond, Jonathan highlighted Babangida’s influence in shaping the nation’s history and governance.
“Ibrahim Babangida, we all know, has been one of the most charismatic leaders in this country. Up to date, people go as if they are going on a pilgrimage to consult him,” Jonathan said, emphasising the former leader’s continued relevance in national affairs.
He noted Babangida’s contributions to infrastructure development and social mobilisation, stating that the former president’s legacy remains an integral part of Nigeria’s history.
“We cannot write the history of Nigeria without dedicating a reasonable part to your service as president,” Jonathan added.
Jonathan also stressed the importance of presidential libraries in preserving national history, urging the Nigerian government to support such initiatives. He referenced the United States’ model, where presidential libraries serve as vital historical repositories and are maintained with government backing.
“The American government helps because they are a source of history. If any scholar wants to know what happened during a particular segment of history, they go to the presidential libraries,” Jonathan said.
He called on the Nigerian government to establish a dedicated department for managing presidential libraries.
He commended Babangida for following in the footsteps of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was the first Nigerian leader to establish a presidential library.
Jonathan expressed hope that more leaders would document their experiences, acknowledging that historical documentation strengthens national memory.
“I also hope that one day I will do my own. But I’m waiting for my seniors that are here before I think about my own,” he said humorously.
Jonathan concluded his remarks by urging well-meaning individuals to support the IBB Presidential Library, noting that it is not just a personal project but a valuable asset for Nigeria and the African continent.
