The military is always feared, especially in the South-East of Nigeria, where several coded operations have sent nerves racking. This has not always been the case, as sometimes, a section of the armed forces does roll out community services and projects that are not kinetic in nature.
Now, in Enugu, the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Madueke joined other formations across the country to commemorate the landmark 70th Anniversary of the Nigerian Navy.
As part of the celebration, NNS Madueke executed a series of high-impact civil-military activities and internal celebrations aimed at fostering community development, youth mentorship, and local harmony in Enugu State.
Speaking to journalists during the week-long activities, which commenced on Monday, May 25, 2026, with an anniversary party said to be colourful, organised for the ship’s company, Nsikan Friday, a Commodore and Commander, NNS Madueke, expressed delight over the 70-year milestone achieved by the Nigerian Navy.
He noted that the anniversary was worth celebrating, thus across the nation, social impact projects, community interface initiatives, as well as other celebratory activities were ongoing to deepen civil-military relationship, citizen engagement and convivial interactions with host communities of naval formations.
The event was said to have brought together officers and ratings of the Base, as well as its civilian friends, providing a platform to celebrate the rich traditions, resilience, and operational successes of the Nigerian Navy over the past seven decades.
Sustaining the momentum on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, NNS Madueke extended its footprint into the host community by organising a robust educational outreach for primary and secondary schools within the Adani Community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The well-attended outreach drew students, pupils, and educators from several prominent local institutions, including Community Primary School, Premier Primary School, Central Primary School, Union Primary School, and Uzo-Uwani Secondary School, all in Adani Community.
During the outreach, John Ikedum, a lieutenant and Boat Officer, delivered a sensitisation lecture, enlightening the youth on the history, constitutional mandates, and career opportunities within the Nigerian Navy, while motivating them toward academic excellence and civic responsibility.
To support local education, NNS Madueke distributed educational exercise books to the students and pupils, while customised NN@70 polo shirts were presented to teachers and invited dignitaries.
In a further bid to solidify civil-military relations, the Base organised a novelty football match thrillingly played between a combined team of security agencies and the host, Adani Community.
The competitive encounter, which drew a large crowd of local spectators, ended with the winning team carting home a championship trophy and a generous cash reward.
Allegedly adding colour and cultural flair to the event, local troupes took centre stage during the halftime break, entertaining the audience with vibrant traditional dances.
The security-community sports fiesta concluded with the further distribution of customised NN@70 polo shirts to players, match officials, and special guests, leaving a lasting impression of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
The authorities have been wooing youths of the South-East to see the Nigerian military as a friend and partners for the preservation of sovereignty. Complaints have been high that south-easterners choose to shun careers in the military. Gaps have continued to widen, requiring non-kinetic approaches to combat violence in the region and some soft programmes to reach to the soft sides of easterners.
