A Nigerian, Onoja Atta Onoja, has been recognised and honoured by US congressional proclamation for his leadership in advancing trade, investment and private-sector collaboration between Africa, the Caribbean and the United States.
Onoja is a Nigerian business executive, international trade advocate and corporate leader with over 20 years of experience spanning shipping, marketing, distribution, energy and international commerce.
He currently serves as President of the Guyana Caribbean Chambers of Trade, Commerce and Industry, where he continues to champion stronger trade, investment and business collaboration between Africa, the Caribbean and the United States.
The congressional proclamation acknowledges his more than two decades of leadership across shipping, distribution, marketing and energy, as well as his work promoting commercial engagement between emerging economies and the United States.
As African businesses increasingly look beyond traditional markets to unlock new opportunities for growth, Onoja has received a congressional proclamation from Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, who recognized his contributions.
Onoja’s recognition was presented during the Guyana Independence Celebration Committee of New York’s commemoration of Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary, bringing together business leaders, diplomats, policymakers and members of the African and Caribbean diaspora committed to expanding economic collaboration across regions.
Besides acknowledging his more than two decades of leadership across various sectors, the congressional proclamation also recognizes Onoja’s contributions to international business development, his service on corporate boards, and his current leadership as President of the African Caribbean Chamber of Trade, Commerce and Industry (ACCTCI), where he continues to champion stronger trade, investment and institutional partnerships between Africa, the Caribbean and North America.
The recognition positions Nigeria for new markets as it comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to maximize opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) while expanding commercial relationships with emerging global markets.
Business leaders increasingly acknowledge that beyond government-to-government agreements, sustained economic growth depends on stronger institutional collaboration, private-sector partnerships and investment facilitation.
Through the ACCTCI, Onoja has championed initiatives that encourage market access, business networking and commercial dialogue among enterprises operating across Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas.
“The future of African prosperity will depend on how effectively we build trusted commercial partnerships across borders,” Onoja said after receiving the recognition, noting that it reinforces the importance of creating practical opportunities for businesses to trade, invest and innovate together. Our shared history must now evolve into shared economic prosperity.”
Industry stakeholders have described the recognition as ‘Recognition Beyond the Individual,’ noting that the Congressional Proclamation reflects the increasing global visibility of Nigerian business leaders who are contributing to international commerce through institution-building, strategic partnerships and economic diplomacy.
“As businesses seek access to new markets and diversified investment opportunities, recognitions such as this reinforce Nigeria’s growing role in shaping conversations around cross-border trade and private-sector collaboration,” they emphasised.
