The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg has alerted Nigerian nationals living in South Africa to planned large-scale law enforcement operations expected to take place across parts of Gauteng Province and surrounding areas between Monday, May 11, and Friday, May 15, 2026.
In a notice issued by Nonye Uche Okey-Uche, consul general, Nigerian citizens were advised to remain law-abiding, vigilant and security-conscious during the period of the operations, which are reportedly aimed at undocumented foreigners, criminal activities, traffic violations and other compliance-related offences.
The Mission disclosed that information available to it indicates that several South African security and enforcement agencies may participate in the coordinated exercise.
“The agencies expected to be involved include the South African Police Service (SAPS), Metro Police, the Department of Home Affairs, National Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Authorities and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF),” it said.
According to the notice, the operations may involve roadblocks, stop-and-search exercises, document verification checks and possible house-to-house inspections in selected areas.
The Consulate further stated that authorities are also expected to focus on non-compliant vehicle owners, warning that vehicles could be impounded while arrests may also be made where necessary.
Areas reportedly earmarked for intensified operations include Alexandra, Johannesburg Central Business District, Mamelodi and Astonville.
Although the Mission noted that the full scope of the operations had yet to be officially confirmed, it urged Nigerians resident in South Africa to take precautionary measures and ensure strict compliance with local laws and regulations.
The Consulate advised Nigerians to always carry copies of valid identification and immigration documents where necessary and to immediately regularise any unresolved immigration, business or vehicle compliance issues.
Citizens were also encouraged to avoid unnecessary movement in areas identified as high-risk during the operation period and to refrain from obstructing or confronting law enforcement officers carrying out official duties.
In addition, the Mission urged Nigerians to promptly report cases of harassment, unlawful detention or emergencies to the Consulate through its official communication channels.
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and protection of Nigerians in South Africa, the Consulate said it would continue to monitor developments closely and provide necessary support to affected citizens.
