Yusuf  Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, is leading the country’s delegation to the 48th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Executive Council in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as African leaders gather to deliberate on pressing continental issues.

The two-day Executive Council meeting, which begins Wednesday, will set the stage for the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government scheduled for February 14 and 15, 2026.

The Executive Council, comprising foreign ministers from AU member states, will review key policy proposals and make recommendations for consideration by heads of state.

Discussions will focus on priority areas central to Africa’s development and stability, including peace and security, democratic governance, economic integration, and sustainable development.

According to a statement issued by Kimiebi Ebienfa, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tuggar will use the platform to advance Nigeria’s strategic interests and reinforce the country’s longstanding commitment to continental cooperation and multilateral engagement.

“Nigeria will actively participate in deliberations aimed at strengthening peace and security mechanisms, deepening democratic governance frameworks, and promoting sustainable development across Africa,” the statement said.

Beyond the plenary sessions, the Nigerian delegation will hold series of bilateral meetings with representatives of African and non-African countries on the sidelines of the summit.

The engagements are aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties, fostering economic partnerships, and enhancing collaboration on shared regional and global challenges.

The AU Summit comes at a time when the continent continues to grapple with security threats, political transitions in several member states, economic pressures, and climate-related challenges.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that updates on major outcomes and Nigeria’s engagements at the summit would be communicated as proceedings unfold.
