19: 00: Kuffour lauds large turnout of voters

Former President John Kuffour of Ghana and leader, ECOWAS Election Monitoring Team to Nigeria, on Saturday in Abuja commended the large turnout of voters for the 2015 general elections.
Kuffour, who visited some polling units along the airport road in Abuja, said the turn-out of voters showed that Nigerians were ready to cast their votes.
“Nigeria is very strategic to West Africa and Africa in general, that is why the attention of the continent and the whole world is focused on this election.
“It is our hope that Nigeria will come out a winner. I commend the way and manner voters conducted themselves.”
Kuffour expressed the hope that INEC would overcome every shortcoming in the general elections.
Some voters complained about late arrival of officials of the Independent National Commission and the slow pace of accreditation.  (NAN)

17:39: Polling agents of four political parties have threatened not to sign the result sheet of Ward 008A, King of Kings Polling Unit, Lugbe, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) if Form EC8A is not shown to them before the commencement of voting.

17:33: Polling unit- Allen; Polling unit code- 009 and Registration area is Solanke St. In Ikeja LGA: The materials for House of Reps did not come afterall and counting is currently taking place.

17:25: At Solanke Adeboye off Allen Ikeja voting centre was peaceful and security ok with voters comporting themselves. However at 4pm INEC officials said electoral materials for House of Reps had finished. 20 out of the 200 people acould not vote.

16:58: Voting postponed at two polling units at Iyalla Street in Alausa, Ikeja,until Sunday, because card readers were not working and there was no back-up.

16:45: Electorates vote under flooded booths at Oke-Afa, Isolo, Lagos. Election may not hold in three wards at Ilamoshe in Oke-Afa as voters are yet to be accredited due to faulty INEC card reader.   flooded   16:30: Elections in Festac is quite peaceful and violent free. At 3rd Avenue to be precise, officials arrived on time like wise voters who came for accreditation. Most points stopped accreditation by 1 pm while some 1:30 after which voting started. Card readers in some polling stations did not work efficiently. Security was good. INEC officers and Police men were well on ground doing their jobs.

16: 20: INEC says voting has been extended to Sunday in areas where there have been problems with the accreditation process.

12:30: The verification of voters for the general elections commenced in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital as scheduled, with many of the electorates queuing at various polling centres. The exercise began with election officials checking the register to cross check the names of voters, a check also showed that materials had arrived most of the polling units as early as 8 a.m.

One of the voters said he would return to vote from 1 p.m. after his name was authenticated and verified. In most other polling units visited within Uyo urban, materials had arrived, while the voters were undergoing the process of accreditation and verification using the card readers.

The materials were despatched two days ago by INEC to various Registration Area Centres ahead of today’s elections.

12:12: UNCONFIRMED: Gunmen allegedly killed a PDP chieftain, Yomi Ademola, in Ikirun, Ifelodun LGA of Osun State. Mr Ademola recently defected to the PDP

12:11: Regis Anukwuoji/ Enugu. Some pulling boots in Awgu complained of late coming of materials. This led to delays in the distribution of materials.  The card readers are also said not to be working in some places like in Awgu ward One and Awgu ward Two.

12:10: As at 11:29 electoral materials and officials are yet to arrive at Alama, Gada Biu and Kabong polling units in Jos North Local Government Area, Plateau State.

12:09:  INEC officials got to some wards late, consequently accreditation started at about 10.30 am in many wards in Aba South LGA. There is a good turnout and the atmosphere is peaceful. Policemen and Civil Defence officials were deployed at polling stations.

11:51: The two card readers at Abdulsalami’s polling unit in Niger State failed to work. Accreditation yet to start at the Uphill Water Tank unit in Sabon Gari Ward of Chachagan Local Government where former military ruler, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), is expected to vote.

11:20: Accreditation delayed by nearly three hours in  Jimoh Balogun Street, Ikosi, Ketu in the Kosofe Local Government Area, Lagos. Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission arrived around 11am.

10:20 The All Progressives Congress’s (APC) National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, has raised the alarm over suspicious, election-related activities being carried out at the Federal Government Press on Mobil Road, opposite Coca Cola, at Ajegunle, Lagos. In a statement, the party said workers at the facility were sent home early on Friday, apparently so it can be made ready for use today (Saturday, March 28th) for a ‘presidency’ assignment.

10:15: Electoral materials just arrived at Citec polling booth- 004A AMAC Mbora District Abuja, voters were out even before 7am, and were given numbers. 10:12: By 9.20 am materials and election officials yet to arrive at booths in parts of Owerri North LGA. About 50km away at Ogboko Ideato South LGA, Gov Rochas Okorocha’s country home, our correspondent saw. Army personnel intercept and arrest a band of thugs who chased an INEC bus carrying election materials.

10:11:  Soldiers alleged to have barricaded the Abuja-Kuje road turning back journalists and observers, European Union team, heading to the town.

10:00: President Jonathan says his interest is for INEC to conduct a credible election. “No matter the hitches experienced in some places, my conviction is that the election will hold peacefully. If I can endure, you can see me sweating… I urge all Nigerians to be patient. Our election is one that the whole world is looking up to. Any sacrifice is worth taking. I encourage Nigerians to be patient with INEC. Everybody will vote, even if the card readers have issues.”

09:50:  Officers yet to arrive as at 9.50am in many of the polling booths in Alapere, Kosofe LGA of Lagos state. People who came for accreditation waited and went home frustrated.

09:42: President Jonathan has been trying but failing to register for the past 20 minutes. The voters card reader seems not to work as President Goodluck Jonathan waits patiently at the polling station in Otuoke.

09: 00 –

08:55: Hundred of excited voters were seen trooping to designated polling units as early as 6 o`clock this morning, amidst of heavily security mounted by operatives of Nigeria Police, and other security agencies. BusinessDay observed at the polling units situated in Protocol section at Government House, which is in Nassarawa Local Government Area of the metropolis, that INEC officials presiding over the election were on ground, waiting for election materials to arrive as at 8.30am.
