NHIS unveils new insurance scheme for Nigerians

Inability to offer credit, insurance services is a major challenge for PSB – Fatokun

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has launched a new health insurance programme known as Group, Individual and Family Social Health Insurance Programme (GIFSHIP) to rapidly expand the scope of healthcare coverage in Nigeria and urgently attain Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Speaking during the launch of the insurance scheme in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of NHIS, Mohammed Sambo said the new programme will provide opportunity for affordable individual enrolment, enrolment of a family unit or a group of people into the insurance scheme.

Sambo explained that GIFSHIP will leverage on the overarching E-NHIS framework which has been on the drawing board for more than a decade and which was recently approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), to be deployed in few months to come.

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire said a major objective of GIFSHIP is to ensure that no Nigerian is left behind on the drive for UHC. He described the programme as a landmark achievement that will reshape the trajectory of healthcare financing in Nigeria.
