The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) said it has begun contact tracing and other containment measures in Cross River State, working with the state’s health authorities, following a reported case of COVID-19.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by Jide Idris, Director-General of the agency, the NCDC said the sole case reported in the state has been isolated and is currently being managed in line with national treatment protocols. The patient, according to the agency, is in stable condition and responding to care.

The NCDC also stated that a coordinated response, including surveillance, infection prevention and control measures, has been activated, alongside active follow-up of all identified contacts.

According to the NCDC, there is no evidence at this stage of widespread transmission linked to the case.

“NCDC is aware of recent media reports regarding a confirmed case of COVID-19 in Cross River State. This is the only confirmed case that has been isolated and is currently being managed in line with national treatment guidelines. The patient is in stable condition and responding to care,” the statement read.

“All identified contacts are being followed up appropriately, and there is no evidence at this time of widespread transmission,” the statement added.

The agency added that it continues to maintain routine surveillance for COVID-19 and other respiratory infections, noting that the detection of the case indicates that these systems remain functional and responsive.

The NCDC advised members of the public to maintain good hand and respiratory hygiene, stay at home and seek care if unwell, and follow updates from official public health authorities.

The NCDC assured that it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
