The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has quietly removed its recently published crime survey report from its official website which went live yesterday after four weeks of downtime.
The report titled “Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey 2024,” released on the 17th of December last year, revealed alarming statistics on kidnapping in Nigeria.
It showed an estimate of 2,235,954 kidnapping incidents between the periods of May 2023 and April 2024, with a staggering N2.23 trillion paid as ransom. It also showed that 65 percent of households affected by kidnapping incidents resorted to paying ransoms to secure the release of victims. On average, each household paid N2.67 million per incident.
According to the report, Nationally, an estimated 51,887,032 crime incidences were experienced by households. The North-West had about 14,402,254 reported the highest incidences of crime at household level, followed by North-Central (8,771,400), while South-East (6,176,031) reported the least.
The report also shows that the crime incidence in the rural area with was 26,526,069 was higher than that of the urban area at 25,360,963 incidents reported. “In Nigeria, 4,142,174 households experienced home robbery. Less than half (36.3%) of the households who were victims of home robbery reported their experience to the police.”
Barely 24 hours after the report was released, the bureau confirmed that its website was attacked via its X (formerly Twitter) account, warning the public to disregard any information posted on it.
The website however came back live yesterday, just in time for the release of the December inflation report, and checks by BusinessDay shows the report missing from the website.
