NAFDAC seals over 3,000 shops in Lagos open drug market

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed more than 3,000 shops within the Idumota Open Drug Market, Lagos, following its screening operation.

The Agency, while disclosing this through its official X account on Saturday said it uncovered large quantities of illicit and unregistered pharmaceuticals, including vaccines stored in highly unsanitary and unventilated conditions.

Among the discoveries were vaccines kept in dilapidated rooms sealed with iron sheets, posing a severe public health risk. The operation also led to the confiscation of large consignments of banned drugs such as Analgin injections, diverted-free HIV antiretroviral medications, expired drugs earmarked for revalidation, and other unregistered pharmaceuticals.

According to NAFDAC officials, the volume of illicit drugs seized was equivalent to 12 truckloads. Additionally, empty packs and cartons of expired and unregistered antimalarial injections were found in a packing shop, with vials removed in an apparent attempt to repackage and distribute them illegally.

The Agency also uncovered a warehouse outside the main pharmaceutical section of the market where highly controlled substances were stored. Among the contraband were Ecstasy (MDMA or Molly), various brands of Codeine Cough Syrup, and Tramadol 225. These drugs, known for their potential abuse, are linked to the rising cases of drug addiction and public health concerns in Nigeria.

NAFDAC however reiterated its commitment to eliminating the sale of unsafe pharmaceuticals and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The Agency also vowed to continue its crackdown on illegal drug markets across the Country to protect public health and safety.
