Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has approved free transportation for citizens aged 70 and above who have served the nation meritoriously. The announcement was made during an interview with journalists on Armed Forces Remembrance Day, held on Wednesday in Jos, the plateau state capital.
Speaking at the event, Governor Mutfwang expressed gratitude for the sacrifices made by members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, highlighting the importance of ensuring that veterans are supported in their old age.
He emphasized the need to recognize the contributions of both the living and the deceased who served the country with dedication.
“We must find a way to look after them in their old age. This Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to honour those who have passed, those who left families behind, and those who are battling life’s challenges in retirement”; he said.
He added that the state government would continue to explore ways to improve the living conditions of retired military personnel.
In line with his commitment, the governor disclosed that the newly approved transportation relief would benefit senior citizens aged 70 and above, particularly those who had served the country. Mutfwang noted that the government was exploring additional ways to support veterans and alleviate their struggles.
Governor Mutfwang also reiterated the significant role the Armed Forces play in modern society, particularly in times of conflict and insecurity. He acknowledged the sacrifices of service members who continue to protect the nation both internally and externally.
Saluting the bravery of the men and women in uniform, Mutfwang underscored the importance of remembering those who have served the country, whether they are still alive or have passed on.
“We must pay respect to those who have served this nation meritoriously,” Mutfwang concluded.
