Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, born on September 2, 1965, is a seasoned diplomat with over two decades of experience in international relations. He has served as Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation since 2005. Educated in Djibouti and abroad, Youssouf’s academic credentials include studies in business management at the University of Liverpool and advanced education in Canada and Belgium.

In April 2024, Djibouti nominated Youssouf for the position of African Union Commission Chairperson. His vision for Africa emphasizes integration, prosperity, and peace, aligned with the AU’s Agenda 2063. He pledges to focus on governance, democracy, peace and security, infrastructure development, and the inclusion of youth and the African diaspora. Backed by Kenyan President William Ruto, Odinga’s candidacy for AU Chairperson is grounded in his proven track record as a mediator and visionary leader.
