Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the appointment of Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakuleyin as the 43rd Olubadan of lbadan land in the Oyo State Capital.

Governor Makinde gave the nod in a memo signed on June 14, 2024, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 19 (Cap 28) Law of Oyo State 2000 as amended.

Olusegun Olayiwola, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, in the statement, said that the approval was a culmination of a series of processes stipulated by the extant laws of the State regarding ascension to the royal throne.

Olayiwola noted that Governor Seyi Makinde congratulated the new Olubadan, praying that his tenure would birth greater developments in Ibadan land and Oyo State as a whole.

However, the governor came under criticisms for saying that the Olubadan-designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, would be installed as the next Olubadan as soon as he is strong enough.

Governor Makinde, who spoke at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, the State capital during the final burial ceremony of the late Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun, who died in March at 81, stated that he had received the recommendation of Olakulehin as the 43rd Olubadan by the Olubadan-in-Council, saying that the due process had been followed in the selection process.

“I have seen the recommendation of the Olubadan-in-Council and I have accepted it. I have accepted it and we will, as soon as our father, Oba Olakulehin is strong enough, he will be enthroned because due process has been followed”, he said.

This statement of the governor was however condemned by many people, especially some Ibadan indigenes.

However in anticipation of the coronation of the Olubadan- designate, his family has begun the sale of ceremony fabric, popularly called Aso Ebi, coronation fabric. The Ankara fabric on display at Olakulehin’s residence in Alalubosa Estate, Ibadan is blue and black colour alongside a stripped yellow Ofi fabric for cap and headgear.
