LIRS Sets January 31 deadline for Annual Tax Returns

Business owners in Lagos must send in their yearly tax paperwork by January 31 or pay fines, the Lagos tax office announced today.

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) says every employer needs to report how much they paid their workers in 2024 and how much tax they collected from these payments.

“Employers must prioritize the timely filing of their annual income tax returns to avoid penalties,” said LIRS Executive Chairman Dr. Ayodele Subair. “Submitting returns on or before the deadline ensures compliance with the law and supports accurate revenue tracking, which is essential for Lagos State’s fiscal planning and sustainability.”

Importantly, the tax office has moved everything online this year. Instead of paper forms, business owners must now use the LIRS website (etax.lirs.net) to submit their information. This change is meant to make the process faster and easier for everyone.

Before filing taxes, business owners need to make sure all their workers have tax ID numbers. Workers who don’t have these numbers should get them through the LIRS website right away.

To help with the online system, LIRS has placed staff members in all its offices. These workers can show employers how to use the website and answer their questions.

The law, known as the Personal Income Tax Act (PITA), requires employers to tell the government about all money paid to workers and the taxes taken from these payments. Missing the January 31 deadline will lead to fines.
