Lawmaker calls for urgent action as flood destroys 65 communities in Plateau

Following the recent flood event in Langtang North Central State Constituency of Plateau state that left a trail of destruction, affecting 65 communities, Daniel Nanbol Listick, the Minority Whip and Representative of the constituency has called for urgent attention from the state government to avert future occurrence.

BusinessDay gathered that the flood, which occurred on June 28, 2024, caused significant property damage, disrupted daily life, and posed safety hazards to residents.

Citing Section 20 of the 1999 Constitution while speaking during plenary, Listick emphasized the state’s responsibility to protect and improve the environment, safeguarding water, air, land, forest, and wildlife.

The lawmaker sought immediate and long-term measures to mitigate the impact of flooding, including a comprehensive assessment of flood-prone areas, infrastructure improvements, and a flood management plan.

“The state shall protect and improve the environment and safeguard the water, air and land, forest and wildlife of Nigeria”; it is very paramount to bring to the notice of this House the recent flood event in sixty-five communities across Langtang North Central State Constituency that occurred on Friday 28th of June, 2024 which caused significant damages to property, disrupted daily life, and posed safety hazards to residents.

“With this flood event, there is a need for immediate and long-term measures to prevent and mitigate the impact of future flooding in Langtang North Central State Constituency and other parts of plateau State”; he said.

He urged the Plateau State Government to direct the Ministry of Works, State Emergency Management Agency, and Local Government Councils to address the flood and prevent future occurrences.

He also called for collaboration with relevant agencies to secure funding and technical support, a community awareness campaign, and relief materials for affected residents.

The lawmaker urged the Plateau State Government to prioritize the flood issue and take immediate action to enhance resilience, protect property, and ensure the safety and well-being of residents.

Proactive measures, the lawmaker emphasized, will minimize the economic and social impact of future flood events in Langtang North Central and other parts of Plateau State.

“I urge the government of Plateau State to prioritize this flood issue and take immediate action aim to enhance resilience to flooding, protect public and private property, and ensure the safety and well-being of all residents.

“Proactive measures will help minimize the economic and social impact of future flood events in Langtang North Central and other parts of Plateau State”.
