Supporters of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, under the umbrella of the Kwankwasiyya Movement have been directed to begin registration with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the planned defection of their leader to the party.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Habibu Sale Mohammed, the movement’s spokesperson, the group announced that Kwankwaso had concluded arrangements to formally join the ADC on Monday.
According to the statement, the former presidential candidate will officially register with the party at his residence, Gidan Kwankwasiyya, located on Miller Road in Kano, at about 12 noon.
The announcement signals a major political shift for the influential Kwankwasiyya political bloc, which has maintained a strong support base in Kano and across parts of northern Nigeria.
The movement also directed its members nationwide to immediately begin registering with the ADC in their respective wards, local government areas and states following Kwankwaso’s formal enrollment.
“Consequently, all members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement are hereby directed to proceed and register with the African Democratic Congress in their respective wards, local government areas and states immediately thereafter,” the statement said.
The group further urged its supporters to actively participate in the activities of the party and contribute to its development and expansion across the country.
“This strategic decision, as always, has been taken in the best interest of the movement, our state and the nation at large,” Mohammed said.
He added that the move reflects the movement’s commitment to democratic values, good governance and the collective aspirations of Nigerians.
The statement also stressed the importance of protecting democratic principles and ensuring that the will of the people is respected at all times.
“The Kwankwasiyya Movement remains resolute, united and committed to building a better and more inclusive Nigeria,” it added.
Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and senator, commands a significant political following through the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which has played a key role in the state’s political landscape for more than a decade. His planned entry into the ADC is expected to reshape political alignments ahead of future electoral contests.
Political observers say the development could strengthen the ADC’s presence in northern Nigeria if the movement’s supporters follow through with the mass registration directive.
