Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain and former governor of Kano State, has condemned the killing of at least 27 people in a recent attack on the Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba, Plateau State. He described the incident as a “tragic and shameful” reflection of the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria.

The attack, which took place in the Jos settlement, has raised significant concerns regarding unrest in various parts of the city. The violence has heightened fears of further escalation within the North Central state.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Kwankwaso noted that the continued bloodshed in Plateau State underscores a dangerous and recurring pattern of violence. He argued that authorities can no longer afford to treat such incidents as routine occurrences.

“This senseless bloodshed represents a continuing failure of leadership and a deepening culture of impunity,” Kwankwaso said. He warned that parts of the country are increasingly being transformed into “killing fields”.

Reports indicate that no fewer than 27 people were killed in the assault, with several others sustaining various injuries. Witnesses described the attack as sudden, leaving residents with little opportunity to escape the violence.

Kwankwaso emphasised that the persistent nature of these attacks points to systemic challenges, including significant lapses in intelligence gathering and delayed security responses. He called on both federal and state authorities to match their declarations of a national emergency with decisive and coordinated action. The former presidential candidate extended his condolences to the families of the victims, the injured, and the Gari Ya Waye community. He urged the government to ensure accountability and implement robust measures to prevent future attacks.

The latest killings add to the growing anxieties surrounding insecurity in Plateau State. Residents continue to demand urgent and effective interventions from the government to halt the cycle of violence.
