President William Ruto has unveiled a groundbreaking policy to see Kenya abolish visa requirements for all international visitors starting January 2024.

Ruto announced the new initiative during a ceremony celebrating 60 years of Kenyan independence. He emphasized the ease and accessibility this would bring for visitors, stating: “Individuals globally won’t have to undergo the hassle of visa applications when coming to Kenya.”
The government has developed a digital platform for obtaining electronic travel authorization (ETA) in advance to facilitate this transition. This efficient system eliminates the need for traditional visa applications, streamlining the process for travellers.
Motivated by Intra-African trade
This decision aligns with Ruto’s vision of strengthening ties with fellow African nations. He has previously advocated for visa-free travel within the continent, highlighting its potential to enhance trade and collaboration.
The president previously announced that visa requirements for African nationals would be waived by the end of 2023. This move has already commenced, with countries like Angola, Comoros, Senegal, and Eritrea receiving visa-free access to Kenya.
