Katsina State Government has disclosed it plans to immunise three million children against polio virus in the March 2026 immunisation campaign across the 361 wards of all the 34 Local Government Areas of the State.
Shamsudeen Yahaya, Executive Secretary, State Primary Health Care Agency, stated this at a media dialogue, sensitisation and mobilisation event held on Monday in Katsina.
He said the immunisation exercise would be for children between 0-59 months, cutting across 19,790 settlements in the 361 wards in the State.
Yahaya explained that the vaccination campaign is expected to commence March 28 to April 2, 2026 including a two-day mop-up exercise before wind up.
Yahaya said more than 10,000 workers are expected to participate in the exercise, including those sponsored by the government, as well as those sponsored by Non Governmental Organisations (NGO).
According to him, “World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), among others as some of the NGOs that would have their personnel involved in the exercise.
“Several states would also be conducting similar vaccination campaigns during the same period, including Kwara, Niger, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe, Adamawa, Nasarawa, and Yobe”.
He said the immunisation campaign for last year had seen about 2.6 million children immunised, even as he hoped this year’s would reach the targeted three million children noting that “though the state recorded only about two cases of the virus in Danumusa council area, this year’s campaign hopes to ensure zero cases are recorded”.
He, therefore, called on media practitioners and other stakeholders to assist in sensitising and mobilising the public to ensure their full participation in the exercise.
