The Kano State Government has commenced a new emergency water intervention programme with the approval of 166 solar-powered boreholes aimed at addressing persistent water shortages across several communities in the state.
Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, disclosed this in a statement seen by BusinessDay on Tuesday, saying the initiative was approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as part of efforts to improve access to clean and reliable water supply for residents.
Hashim said the solar-powered boreholes are expected to provide about 4.15 million litres of water daily, benefiting an estimated 830,000 residents in water-stressed communities across Kano State.
According to him, each borehole is designed to supply approximately 25,000 litres of water daily and serve about 5,000 people.
He described the project as the first phase of a broader intervention plan, noting that additional solar-powered boreholes would be deployed in more communities in the coming months.
Hashim explained that the initiative forms part of the state government’s immediate response to ease the impact of water shortages while larger rehabilitation and expansion projects in the water sector continue.
He said the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf remained committed to providing sustainable and practical solutions to the water needs of residents through improved infrastructure and alternative energy-powered systems.
The acting commissioner also revealed that rehabilitation works at the Tamburawa and Challawa water treatment plants had commenced following the approval and award of contracts by the state government.
He noted that the rehabilitation projects are expected to significantly improve water production and distribution across Kano metropolis and adjoining communities.
Hashim added that the government is pursuing a comprehensive strategy to revitalise the water sector through infrastructure upgrades, expansion of supply networks and deployment of energy-efficient solutions to ensure long-term sustainability.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Water Resources to supporting the governor’s vision of ensuring equitable and reliable water supply for the growing population of the state.
The state government also urged residents to safeguard public water facilities and promote responsible water usage to ensure the success of ongoing interventions.
