Kano govt begins #EndBadGovernance protest probe

…says 10 lives lost, N11bn properties destroyed

A Commission of Inquiry instituted by the Kano State Government under the Administration of Governor Abba Yusuf to probe #EndBadGovernance Protest has said that ten lives were lost, while seven others were critically injured, just as properties valued at over N11 billion were destroyed during the protest in the State.

The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria was a decentralised mass protests which occurred across Nigeria between 1 August to 10 August, last year (2024), triggered by the rising cost of living in the Country.

These facts were made public, when Lawan Wada-led Committee constituted by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, submitted the report of its findings to Kano State Executive Committee Council (KESCC) at Government House in Kano on Tuesday.

The report put the number of persons killed during the protest at ten and, those critically injured at seven, while, public and properties belonging to private individuals and corporate groups worth over N11 billion were destroyed.

Confirming details of contained in the report, Sanusi Bature, spokesperson to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, told BusinessDay, that the report was submitted by Lawan Wada, a Justice and Chairman of the Committee to the 25th Meeting of the Kano State Executive Council.

On receiving the report, Governor Abba was said to have promised to implement all the recommendations suggested by the Committee to prevent future occurrence of the incident in the State.

According to Bature, the governor also announced that a white paper would be issued, on individuals believed to have been responsible for sponsoring and perpetrating the violent that characterised the protest in the State.

Governor Yusuf was said to have declared that his administration did not interfere in the Committee’s six-month-long investigation as full autonomy was given to the Committee to fully carry out its mandate, diligently.

“We have confidence in the integrity and professionalism of the committee members. They were selected based on merit, and I am optimistic that they have done their job without bias,” the governor was said to have stated it.

The governor assured that the Government would take appropriate action on the reports and findings to serve as a deterrent to those who incite violence and destruction, while, commending the Committee for a job well done.

He was said to have expressed the commitment of his administration to fully implement the report’s recommendations, which signalled a decisive step toward accountability and justice in Kano State.

Presenting the report earlier, Wada, a High Court Judge, disclosed that the Committee visited all affected areas and engaged with stakeholders in the course of their deliberations, which resulted in comprehensive account of the incident generated.
