The Kano State Government has assured residents that the lingering dispute surrounding the Kano Emirate will soon be resolved through peaceful and amicable means, urging citizens to remain calm and supportive as efforts continue to stabilise the situation.
Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, gave the assurance on Thursday while addressing journalists in Kano, stating that the administration remains committed to unity, development, and inclusive governance.
Speaking on recent political developments following Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s move into a new political arrangement, Waiya clarified that the decision of the Deputy Governor, who did not defect alongside the governor, saying the decision remains entirely his personal choice.
“It is entirely up to the deputy governor to decide whether to continue working with the governor within the new political arrangement or choose a different path,” Waiya said.
The commissioner stressed that the administration is focused on governance and public welfare rather than political distractions.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency, peace, and inclusive leadership, assuring that the interests of Kano residents remain paramount.
“Our approach is guided by respect for the rule of law, traditional institutions, and the collective interests of the people of Kano State,” he added.
The ongoing tension surrounding the Kano Emirate stems from longstanding disputes over the restructuring of the traditional institution, which previously led to the creation of multiple emirates during the former administration.
Subsequent political changes brought renewed controversy over the status and leadership of the emirate councils, triggering legal battles, political disagreements, and public debates over the future structure of traditional authority in the state.
The crisis intensified alongside recent political realignments within the state, including defections and shifting alliances ahead of future electoral contests.
Many people in the state believe that resolving the emirate issue remains crucial for restoring political and social stability in Kano, given the institution’s deep cultural and historical significance.
The commissioner maintained that consultations with stakeholders are ongoing and express optimism that a peaceful resolution will soon be achieved.
