Kano distributes 4m face masks in new anti-Covid-19 campaign

Over 4 million face masks have been distributed free of cost to residents of the commercial city of Kano by the state government, as part of the on-going effort to curtail the spread of Covid-19 in the state.

The move is coming on the heels of what the state government says is the scaling up of public awareness of the compulsory wearing of face mask, among other protocols, by residents of the state.

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, made the disclosure Monday, while re-launching the distribution of face mask targeted at transportation associations/groups and Student bodies, at Government House, in Kano.

The governor, who expressed delight that the state is gradually winning the campaign against the Covid-19 pandemic assures that the new strategy is being deployed will ensure effective use of face mask at all levels of the society.

“We are indeed very glad that the fight against COVID-19 pandemic in the state is gradually being won, as it is evident in the declining rate of people testing positive to the virus.

“However, as we are thankful to God for this, we must take into consideration that we are still being confronted with the challenge of people refusing to obey the directive of the state government on the wearing of face mask.

“The event today is geared at re-launching the on-going campaign on the need for compulsory wearing of the face mask which experts have identified as one of the most important protocols for the curtailment of the spread of the virus”, the government stated.

According to him, the targeted beneficiaries of the distribution are members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and Students bodies among other groups.

He noted that the start of the official distribution of the face masks by his administration, over four of the item have been distributed to various categories of the residents of the state.

The governor appealed to the vehicle owners as well as drivers to ensure they always obey the wearing of face mask order, adding should any passenger, they are conveying failed to wear a face mask, they will be held responsible.

He disclosed that all security agents operating in the state have been enlisted in the enforcement of the implementation of the directive as of ensuring optimal use of the face mask throughout the state.

“The launching will be replicated in all the 4 newly created emirates councils in the state because of the important role which the Traditional Institution is capable of playing in the creation of awareness at the grassroots.
“We are not going to relent in our effort. We are going to continue to stand firm and see that we isolate the pandemic until total victory is recorded by the grace of God”, he explicated.
