IWD: Bello, others urge women to embrace ICT

Shimite Bello, executive assistant to the Delta State Governor and coordinator Delta-UNIDO Center and Export Initiatives (DUCEI), has called on women in the state and country at large, to take interest in information communications technology (ICT) sectors.

She said such sectors include financial technology, communication technology and political technology which women could apply in their businesses, upbringing of children and political participation.

She spoke at an event to celebrate the 2023 International Women’s Day, in Asaba, Delta State capital, with the theme: ‘Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality.’

Bello, who was a resource person at the occasion, also alluded to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) naira redesign cashless policy which ensures transactions are made more online rather than in cash.

“When they brought the redesign of naira notes, I saw queues with people trying to get the (banking) app. So, whether you like it or not, the society is moving on and you must move on with the new devopment,” she said.

On her part, Flora Alatan, the state commissioner for women affairs, urged women to acquire ICT skills to keep pace with modern economic and social trends.

The lnternational Women’s Day is a United Nations recognised event celebrated on the 8th of March every year to highlight specific issues affecting women and to celebrate the women folk.

Alatan noted that the theme of this year’s event was a clarion call for women and girls to improve their knowledge of the use and application of ICT to solve societal problems.

I want to appeal to our women to embrace it (ICT), so that we can flow with the global market; flow with the global system.”

Sonia Onubunjo, the chairperson Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) also stressed the need for women to embrace trends in Information Commutation Technology.

Representatives of the International Federation of Women Lawyers FIDA; A non-governmental Organization StandUp for Women Society and personel of other women professional organisations attended the 2023 Women’s Day Celebration.
