Italian man gets 24 years in prison for beating Nigerian man to death

Filippo Ferlazzo, an Italian man, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for beating a Nigerian man, Alika Ogorchukwu, to death

The incident occurred in July 2022, in the Italian city of Civitanova Marche.

The victim was a 39-year-old street vendor. He was selling handbags and other items on the sidewalk when he was approached by the Italian man.

Ferlazzo reportedly accused Ogorchukwu of harassing his girlfriend. He then began to beat Ogorchukwu, using his bare hands and a crutch. Ogorchukwu died at the scene.

Ferlazzo was arrested and charged with murder. He was convicted and sentenced to 24 years in prison by an Italian court on September 28, 2023.

This information was released in a statement on Thursday by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission NiDCOM).

In the statement released by NiDCOM which was signed by spokesperson Gabriel Odu, Dabiri-Erewa praised the Nigerian Mission in Rome for handling this issue and others involving Nigerians with diligence.

“I am glad that this case finally received justice. Like I always say, there have to be consequences for actions.” She remarked.

The case has sparked outrage in Italy and around the world. Many people have accused the Italian authorities of failing to protect Ogorchukwu.
