The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) has inducted a new set of graduate members, charging them to uphold professionalism, innovation, and accountability in the construction industry.

The 5th Induction and Oath-Taking Ceremony, hosted by the University of Jos (UNIJOS) Department of Building, brought together industry leaders, academics, and policymakers to highlight the critical role of builders in national development.

Jeremiah Satmark, an engineer and chief of staff to the Plateau State Governor, who served as the guest of honour, underscored the importance of skilled professionals in building sustainable communities. Addressing the inductees, he noted that builders are now gaining greater recognition and opportunities in the industry.

“The knowledge you have acquired here is enough to sell you to the world. Wherever you find yourselves, be good ambassadors of this institution, uphold professionalism, and never compromise on standards,” Satmack said.

He pledged support for the UNIJOS Building Department and assured collaboration to address industry challenges, including arbitration issues, while expanding opportunities for young builders.

Tanko Ishaya, a professor and the Vice-Chancellor of UNIJOS, represented by Rahila Gowon, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), commended the Department of Building for securing accreditation from the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON). She affirmed that the program meets both academic and professional standards, equipping graduates with essential skills for national development.

“Our graduates are trained in one of the best Building departments, not just in Nigeria but globally. With the right skills and knowledge, they are well-equipped to contribute meaningfully to national development,” she said.

Delivering the keynote address on “The Budding Builder and the Society,” D.D. Jambol, emphasized the responsibility of builders in ensuring structural safety, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. He urged them to approach their careers with integrity, continuous learning, and a commitment to high industry standards.

“Building is more than erecting structures; it is a responsibility to society. Your credibility will be defined by the quality of your work, ethical decisions, and commitment to lifelong learning,” Jambol stated.

Identifying key industry challenges such as weak regulatory frameworks and poor enforcement of standards, he encouraged inductees to see these as opportunities to innovate and establish themselves as leaders in consulting, project management, real estate, and sustainable construction.

Alderton Ewa, the National President of NIOB, welcomed the new members and commended UNIJOS and the Plateau State Chapter of NIOB for grooming professionals. He stressed the need for mentorship, technological advancements, and vocational training to empower young builders.

“A budding builder is more than just an apprentice; they embody innovation and ambition. Our society must nurture their potential by providing strong vocational training, mentorship, and opportunities to apply their skills,” he said.

The event featured the administration of the professional oath, the presentation of membership certificates, and merit awards recognizing outstanding contributions to the building profession.
