Insecurity: Ondo to register drivers, warns those without valid licence

The senior special assistant to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State on special duties and strategy, Doyin Odebowale, says the government has resolved to register all commercial taxi drivers across the 18 local government areas of the state in order to guarantee the safety of the people.

Odebowale while speaking with journalists in Akure on Tuesday also warned that taxi drivers without valid driver’s licence would no longer be allowed to operate in the state.

According to him, the government has also resolved that vehicles without taxi colour would not be allowed to operate, until such are painted and all taxi drivers to register their data and that of their vehicles with the Ondo State Internal Revenue Service (ODIRS) and State Information Technology Agency (SITA).

He, however, said drivers must pay N2,000 for registration form before they would be allowed to operate.

“Only commercial taxi drivers that will operate must come up with valid documents and driver’s licence. We are doing this to guarantee our people’s safety. We want to know the people who are driving taxis in Akure, the state capital and there won’t be registration by proxy. You must come with your driver’s licence and this must be done within three months,” Odebowale stated.
