Insecurity hurting Eastern region economy – Women group

Insecurity hunting Eastern region economy – women group

Igbo women socio-cultural group, ‘Nkata Ndi Inyom Igbo’ has decried the insecurity in Southeast, hunting economy of the region.

Iyom Josephine Anenih, president-general of the body while reacting on “state of the nation” in Awka on Wednesday, condemned the deteriorating security situation in the country especially in the Eastern region.

She said the South-eastern states recently had been burdened by economic hardship because of insecurity.

“We as women of Igbo land are saddened by the fact that blood is being spilled all over the country and government at various levels seem incapable of stemming the tide.

“As women, we are appalled that we cannot go about our businesses without fear of being killed, raped, kidnapped or abducted. We are unhappy because our children cannot go to school feeling safe and protected by adults and the governments.

“For so long, the South-eastern states had been burdened by economic hardships. Movement around the region had been made more expensive because of the several roadblocks that translate not to more or better security but avenues for extortion and intimidation.

“Today, we as women are shocked that the seeming sense of security being provided cannot protect us and our children as there have been series of deaths, abductions, and arson in our region. Our children are dying.

We call on all governments at all levels to expedite action on saving lives in our region and across the country, because as women we know that no productive lives can exist in a state of anarchy and insecurity.

“We appeal to the governors of our region to step up beyond the establishment of Ebube Agu to dialogue with all those that can make peace return to our region.

“We believe in the Igbo mantra of Agu n’eche Ibe that mandates everyone to look out for the security of each other.

“Ebube Agu must be married to the Agu n’eche ibe social mantra. We want the security of our region and country to be taken more seriously than the finger-pointing going on at the moment while our people either die or are living in fear and utter hopelessness,” Anenih lamented.
