The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has raised an urgent alarm over the increasing influx of foreign fighters from the Sahel into terrorist groups operating within Nigeria. This growing trend poses a significant security threat, as these fighters bolster the capabilities of insurgent factions, exacerbating the already volatile situation in affected regions.
This revelation highlights the growing complexity of the country’s security challenges, as external elements now bolster the ranks of local extremists, posing an even greater threat to national stability and security.
In a press briefing on Thursday in Abuja, Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, revealed this concerning development in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.
Buba outlined the military’s strategic objective to dismantle these terrorist groups through a multi-faceted approach. “Our goal is clear—to break these groups apart. Defeating an enemy means either destroying them or bringing them into the fight,” he stated.
The Director emphasized that significant progress has been made through coordinated efforts involving operatives, commanders, and security agencies. “We are targeting the critical assets that support these groups, including their logistics, administration, and fighting capabilities,” he said.
Additionally, he stressed the importance of leveraging regional and international partnerships, as well as media engagement, to apply consistent pressure on these groups.
Buba highlighted the broader strategy, noting that wars are often won by breaking the enemy’s will. “This is a long and enduring military operation. At its conclusion, we aim not just for a legal victory, but for a decisive one that ensures the complete eradication of these threats,” he explained.
While progress has been made, Buba acknowledged the ongoing challenges. “Sadly, we have not yet achieved total success, but I assure you, we are inching closer every day,” he said.
He reiterated the importance of collective responsibility, urging citizens to remain vigilant. “Security is everyone’s business. If we compromise on security, we compromise everyone’s safety,” he warned.
Bub urged Nigerians to continue supporting the nation’s fight against terrorism, emphasizing that sustained effort is key to overcoming insecurity and restoring peace.
