Former Vice President Abubakar Atiku says he will push for a constitutional amendment that allows Nigeria’s presidency rotates across the country’s six geopolitical zones if voted as president in 2027.

Nigeria is currently divided into six zones: South-South, South-East, South-West, North-East, North-West, and North-Central. Together, the zones comprise 36 states, with Abuja as Federal Capital Territory.

Atiku spoke during a live interview on “Prime Time” show monitored on Arise News Television, on Wednesday, saying the arrangement will ensure political stability in the country and reduce agitation against marginalisation.

“If that is the only constitutional amendment that I can achieve,” Atiku said, even as he noted that he will support any consensus candidate that will emerge from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to Atiku, the ADC will go for a consensus presidential candidate first, but if that doesn’t work, the party will consider a democratic process in picking the most popular candidate during their primaries.

“I will support any candidate that emerges from a consensus arrangement or democratic process during our primaries in ADC”

On why he will be contesting when 2023 to 2027 is seen as the turn of the South, Atiku dismissed the notion, saying: “There’s no zoning in the Nigerian constitution.

He added that the South has been more in power than the North 1999 till date. By 2027, the North will be in deficit of eight years, Atiku said.

He described President Bola Tinubu as the “worse president” he has seen from 1999 to date” even as he lampooned the current administration for its failure in the area of security and economy.
“With the ADC coalition, Tinubu is dead on arrival, Atiku insisted.
