Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Nigeria has called for greater intelligence sharing among African law enforcement agencies as a key strategy to tackle crime and terrorism across the continent.

Speaking at the Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (EAPCCO) conference, the IGP stressed the importance of regional collaboration, data-driven policing, and cross-border efforts in fighting transnational organized crime.

He highlighted the success of the West African Police Information System (WAPIS), a robust intelligence-sharing mechanism that enables member states to exchange critical crime data.

According to him, WAPIS, which utilizes data analytics and INTERPOL’s I-24/7 network, has significantly improved coordination in the fight against terrorism and organized crime across West Africa.

Beyond intelligence sharing, the IGP emphasized the need for continuous investment in training and capacity building for officers to equip them with the skills necessary to combat emerging security threats.

He also underscored the role of community engagement in preventing radicalization and fostering trust between law enforcement and the public.

“As we move forward, I propose that we explore more opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing between our two regions. “By pooling resources, expertise, and experiences, we can develop more effective strategies to address our common security challenges”, Egbetokun stated.

He reiterated his commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and praised the leadership of EAPCCO for organizing the conference.

Congratulating the police chiefs in attendance, he expressed optimism that the outcomes of the meeting would shape the future of law enforcement cooperation in Africa.
