The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) are set to deepen their collaboration in the fight against corruption through sensitization and training.
This was revealed when Ndidi Nwabuche, Acting Controller General of the NCoS, visited Musa Aliyu, ICPC Chairman, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday. Aliyu commended the NCoS for its proactive stance on corruption prevention and emphasized the need to leverage the experiences of ex-convicts in public sensitization efforts.
“It’s important for Nigerians to hear directly from those who have experienced the consequences of crime and corruption,” he stated. He also stressed the importance of training between the two agencies to enhance mutual learning and efficiency.
He proposed signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that would provide a structured framework for future engagements. In his remarks, Nwabuche highlighted his commitment to corruption prevention, explaining that his visit was part of an effort to engage with institutions that impact the NCoS’s work.
“Since my appointment on December 15, 2024, by President Tinubu, I have prioritized strengthening relationships with key agencies like the ICPC,” he said. He expressed satisfaction with the ICPC’s Ethics and Integrity Compliance Scorecard (EICS) and affirmed the NCoS’s readiness to work within the Commission’s framework to address existing challenges.
Meanwhile, the ICPC has also pledged to collaborate with the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) to enhance transparency and accountability in governance. During a separate meeting at the Commission’s headquarters, ICPC Chairman, Aliyu, emphasized the importance of ethical governance and the role of both agencies in preventing corruption.
“We need to strengthen the whistleblower mechanism in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and encourage the public to report corruption issues confidentially,” he said. He proposed signing an MoU with NSITF to formalize their partnership and outline collaborative anti-corruption initiatives.
Faleye Oluwaseun, NSITF Managing Director, commended the ICPC’s efforts in tackling corruption and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to good governance. He emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation in training, policy advisory support, and joint monitoring mechanisms.
The two organizations agreed to work closely in promoting transparency and ethical standards within government institutions.
