…as Kwankwasiyya Movement denies wrongdoing
Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the Deputy Governor of Kano State, has resigned from office amid mounting political pressure and an ongoing impeachment move initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by Habibu Sale Mohammed, the Spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, said the decision was taken in the interest of political stability and smooth governance in the State.
According to the statement, the resignation—though described as difficult—was necessary following recent developments that had made it increasingly challenging for the deputy governor to fully discharge the responsibilities of his office.
“This decision has been taken in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in Kano State,” the statement said.
It added that prevailing circumstances had constrained the effective functioning of the office of the deputy governor, making it necessary to step aside to allow the administration to operate without further political distractions.
The announcement comes days after the Kano State House of Assembly began moves to impeach Gwarzo over a series of allegations that lawmakers said bordered on abuse of office and misconduct. Although the details of the allegations were not fully disclosed publicly, the development had intensified political tension within the State Government.
Despite the unfolding impeachment process, the Kwankwasiyya Movement insisted that the deputy governor’s resignation should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly,” the statement said.
The movement maintained that Gwarzo remains confident that his record in public service reflects integrity and dedication to the people of Kano State.
Observers say the resignation may help defuse the political standoff between the executive arm and the state legislature, which had threatened to escalate into a prolonged institutional crisis.
Gwarzo, a prominent member of the Kwankwasiyya political bloc led by former Kano governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had served as deputy to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf since the administration assumed office in 2023.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement said the former deputy governor would now focus on strengthening the political structure of the movement and repositioning it ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general elections.
According to the statement, his next political engagement will involve rebuilding party strategies, consolidating grassroots structures, and coordinating political alignments in preparation for future contests.
Political analysts say the move could also signal an internal recalibration within the ruling political bloc in Kano as stakeholders reposition ahead of the next election cycle.
Meanwhile, the movement called on its supporters and residents of Kano State to remain calm and law-abiding while continuing to support the government’s development agenda.
“Supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the good people of Kano State are urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and steadfast in their commitment to democratic values and good governance,” the statement added.
