Gunshots have been fired within the walls of the Kirikiri Maximum Security Correctional Centre, Thursday afternoon in what appears to be a show of force to wade off potential attacks as calm returns to Ikoyi Correctional Centre after a temporary unrest.

It is unclear what triggered the gunshots.

The Kirikiri market has been shutdown and shops within residential neighborhoods such as the Agia Industrial Estate have also been shutdown.

Calm has returned and the gunshots have also ceased.

All access roads to the correctional centre have been closed.
