Gunmen rob, kill POS operator in Benin

The state Commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo warned those planning to disturb the existing peace in the state to steer clear or face the consequences of their actions.

Three gunmen on Friday afternoon invaded a Point of Sale (POS) store in Benin City and killed the operator.

It was gathered that the armed men stormed the shop and went straight to the young girl in her early twenties who was operating the POS shop.

The incident happened at Godwin Abbey Way, off Sapele road in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of the state where the centre was located.

It was also gathered that the armed men after collecting her money, mobile phones and other personal belongings still went ahead to shoot the young girl.

It was learnt that the gunmen after carrying out the dastardly act sped off towards the Sapele road axis.

The death of the young girl attracted some sympathisers who described the deceased as a young promising girl who was into POS business to make ends meet.

When contacted for comments, the Police Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor said the command has deployed a team of detectives to the scene of the crime to unravel the circumstances that led to her death and to also bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to book.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Command has paraded 34 persons suspected to be involved in various crimes in the state.

The suspects were also alleged to be involved in public disturbance thereby breaching the peace of the state, vandalism and cult-related activities across the State.

Of the figure, 20 were arrested for armed robbery, four for kidnapping, seven for cultism while three were escaped, inmates.

The state Commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo, who made the disclosure while briefing newsmen at the command headquarters in Benin City, however, warned those planning to disturb the existing peace in the state to steer clear or face the consequences of their actions.

Kokumo, who said the command has perfected plans to wage war against criminals in the state as Christmas season approaches, however, dispelled the rumour making the rounds that more than 20 persons were kidnapped along the Benin-Ekpoma-Auchi road on Thursday.

He revealed that five persons were abducted while personnel of the vigilance group lost his life during an encounter with the armed men.

One of the suspects, Pius Ogbeide, who narrated his involvement, said he was arrested alongside his gang for robbing a Point Of Sale (POS), along Ekenwan road in Oredo Local Government Area of the State.

Ogbeide said after they were arrested at a hotel by officers of the police force.
