Greenplinth Africa Limited has reiterated its commitment its 80 million cookstoves initiative to deepen Nigeria’s clean energy adoption and promote economic inclusion on a massive scale for Nigerian households.

Babatunde Aina, the group financial officer, Greenplinth Africa Limited, said that the initiative was a transformative intervention capable of advancing climate action, improving public health, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth.

He added that the initiative seeks to promote clean energy adoption, healthier homes, women’s empowerment, climate responsibility and economic inclusion on a massive scale.

“This project is about replacing smoke with safety. It’s about replacing pollution with protection. It’s about replacing waste with value,” Aina said during a 2-day strategic project implementation management retreat and stakeholders engagement of the 80M Clean Cookstoves project in Nigeria.

Themed, ‘Clean Cooking Access in Africa: Igniting Socio-Economic Change with 80M Clean Cookstoves in Nigeria,’ chaired by Ibrahim Usman Jibril, Emir of Nasarawa and president, Nasarawa Emirate Council.

Organised by GreenPlinth Africa Limited, the two-day retreat, which was concluded on Wednesday June 24, 2026, included a strategic action for the phased roll-out of the 80M Clean Cookstoves project in Nigeria, and a special media chat aimed at stirring conversations and actionable plans.

Aina described the project as one of the most far-reaching clean household energy programmes ever conceived on the African continent.

“It’s about proving that Nigeria can lead the world with a model that is socially inclusive, digitally verifiable, environmentally transformative and financially sustainable,” he said.

According to him, the initiative is designed to transform how millions of Nigerian households cook, live and participate in the growing climate economy.

“Today is not about announcing just another project. There have been too many of those. Today is about declaring a national movement.

“This is not just clean cooking. This is clean cooking linked to household resilience, family well-being and social protection,” Aina said.

According to him, each of the clean cookstoves carry a 30-year warranty and comes with a digital measuring, reporting and verification (DMRV) device capable of monitoring usage through blockchain-enabled technology.

“The environmental benefit is measurable. The social value is visible. The data is bankable. The impact is scalable,” Aina said.

He also disclosed that the 80 mission clean cookstove initiative would be complemented with a four billion tree planting initiative targeted towards environmental restoration across the country.

“We have already started the pilot in Makoko, and that pilot is helping us validate the operational model, community engagement strategy, technology performance and DMRV reporting ecosystem,” he said.

According to him, Lagos was selected for the pilot phase because of its population size, governance structure and readiness for innovation-driven development projects.

Ibrahim Usman Jibril, Emir of Nasarawa & President, Nasarawa Emirate Council, said that the initiative was designed to reduce environmental damage, lower indoor air pollution, and support family welfare.

“For Greenplinth to come up with this initiative, they are not only helping us to get the carbon credits that others are reaping away, but they are helping humanity.”

According to Jibril, millions of people across the continent  and beyond still depend on firewood, charcoal and kerosene for cooking, which exposes them to serious health risks.

“Annually, over three million people lose their lives as a result of diseases related to bad cooking habits and dirty cooking habits,” he said.

Jibril, a former minister of environment, who served as chairman of the retreat, described the Makoko pilot programme as strategic, given the community’s population density and energy challenges. “Targeting such an area is critical, and I believe it is a step in the right direction.”

Jibril also urged Greenplinth Africa to strengthen collaboration with universities and research institutions to ensure scientific research and innovation support implementation and long-term sustainability
