Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has directed the immediate suspension of Okezie Ahutionye, executive secretary, Aba Town Planning Authority, over the collapsed 3-story building under construction at Azikiwe Road, Aba.
This is as the Governor also directed security agents to arrest the developer of the property and bring him to justice, swiftly.
Ikpeazu, while on a visit to the site of the collapsed building, Thursday, expressed sadness over the incident, which has so far claimed five lives, decried the low-quality materials used to erect the 3-story building.
He expressed his desire to meet with the families of the dead persons and directed the State Ministry of Lands, Planning, and Survey, to improve its supervision at construction sites, and condemned those, who embark on the construction of buildings without obtaining proper approvals, warning them to desist from such acts or face dire consequences.
Meanwhile, Governor Ikpeazu has appointed Roland Nwakanma, deputy general manager, Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), as the site coordinator of the ongoing search and recovery efforts of the government.
This was revealed by John Okiyi Kalu, state’s commissioner for Information, while addressing newsmen after the commissioning of Abia State Infectious Disease Hospital and COVID-19 treatment centre in Aba.
He assured that the Governor is directly supervising the recovery efforts and will ensure that anyone found culpable in the building collapse will be brought to justice.
