A fuel-laden truck, on Tuesday, lost its brakes along Beere-Oje sloppy road in Ibadan, Oyo State Capital, crushing some commercial tricycles popularly known as Keke Napep, along Beere-Oje road.

The accident, which occurred around 1:15pm, reportedly claimed two lives, while three others sustained varying degree of injuries, throwing the busy inner-city corridor into chaos after the tanker had rammed into multiple tricycles conveying passengers.

It was gathered that the tanker lost control from Oja-Oba area, descending the sloppy road towards Beere and Oje areas of the town before crashing into the tricycles.

Eyewitnesses said, “people started shouting and running”, as eyewitnesses at the scene described a moment of panic as the heavy-duty vehicle crushed the tricycles, leaving some occupants trapped beneath the wreckage.

Later, images and videos of the scene of the crash started circulating online, showing severely damaged tricycles pinned under the tanker, while bystanders and first responders struggled to rescue victims.

Emergency responders, including Police officers and traffic management officials, were promptly deployed to the scene to control the situation, evacuate the injured, and restore order to traffic in the area.

Ayanlade Olayinka, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) who confirmed the accident said, “I can confirm that there was an accident along the aforementioned road in Ibadan.

“However, I can not at this moment confirm the extent of the damage or the number of those injured or killed as the details are still emerging. The situation have been brought under control and investigation is still ongoing, a fuel-laden tanker which rammed into commercial tricycles, popularly known as ‘Keke Marwa.”

However, Rosemary Alo, Oyo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, later confirmed that two persons died while three others sustained injuries in the road traffic accident that occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Beere area of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

She stated that the accident involved a commercial DAF tanker? belonging to BOVAS filling station and five tricycles.
