The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is considering creating more centres in Lagos to accelerate the process of plate number registration and issuance of driver’s license.
The move followed a request by the state government for additional licensing centres in Nigeria’s commercial city, which put population is estimated at over 20 million people.
Corps marshal of the FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi, who disclosed this during a visit to the Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, said this was also neccessary because Lagos accounts for 40 percent of vehicular density in the country. This he added, comes with overwhelming demands for number plates administration and driver’s license.
Oyeyemi said full operations have resumed in all FRSC formations across the country after the #EndSARS protest disruptions.
He said he was in Lagos to further strengthen the bond between the state government and the FRSC in the aftermath of the #EndSARS, which was hijacked by hoodlums to unleash violence and destroy private and public assets, including a licensing office at Ojodu.
“I was on full inspection last week but we have the worst scenario in Lagos State where our crew vehicles with driver’s license items and our commands were vandalised and some were burnt.
‘’We have to resume work fully and the government will support us. Mr governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has also promised us partnership so that the traffic management in Lagos is not left like this as it is. We must all work together.
“We have also spoken about frequent falling of tankers, break down of articulated vehicles, creating crisis and the need for safety.’’
Oyeyemi noted that with a few weeks to Christmas and end of the year, there was a need to put measures in place to ensure safety on the roads across the country.
‘’We believe we need to help Lagos manage traffic situation – the Third Mainland Bridge is going on, it is a joint effort,” he said.
The corps marshal applauded the Lagos State governor Sanwo-Olu for continued support for road safety measures and the prompt response of the officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) whenever an incident of a fallen tanker occurs on Lagos roads.
