FG seeks probe into Nigerian footballer, Abubakar Lawal’s death in Uganda

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement signed by its Acting Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, on Tuesday, extended condolences to Lawal’s family, friends, teammates, and the Nigerian football community.

Lawal, a former Nigerian Under-20 international, was playing for Vipers Football Club in Uganda and was also a final-year Business Administration student at Cavendish University before his untimely demise.

The Nigerian High Commission in Kampala has been in contact with Ugandan authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.

The Ministry assured that a thorough and transparent inquiry, including an autopsy, would be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The Ministry further directed the High Commission to provide all necessary consular support to Lawal’s family and ensure that justice is served.

“Nigeria values its strong bilateral relations with Uganda, and we are confident that the Ugandan authorities will handle this matter with the utmost seriousness and sensitivity,” the statement read.

It urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation that could hinder the investigation.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare and rights of Nigerians abroad and pledged to monitor the situation closely.
