The Federal Government is considering installing speed bumps on Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge to tackle the issue of over-speeding, which has led to multiple accidents and fatalities.
David Umahi, the Minister of Works, revealed this during a stakeholder meeting on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project in Lagos. He expressed concern over the high speed of motorists on the recently rehabilitated bridge and urged drivers to slow down to prevent the introduction of speed bumps, which could cause heavy traffic congestion.
“We have to talk to our people. The speed there is terrible. If we put speed bumps, then it is going to create a heavy hold-up on the bridge,” Umahi stated.
He also mentioned the government’s ongoing work on key bridges in Lagos, including the Third Mainland Bridge, Carter Bridge, and Eko Bridge.
To enhance monitoring and safety, the minister announced that CCTV cameras had been installed on and under the Third Mainland Bridge. These cameras will soon be inaugurated, with officials stationed to monitor footage and enforce speed limits.
Umahi further disclosed that the Third Mainland Bridge rehabilitation project had been extended to Falomo, where additional streetlights and CCTV cameras have been installed. He emphasized that activities on this stretch would be remotely monitored from Abuja.
“Let me also announce that we have done an extension of that bridge rehabilitation, a beautiful sight to behold from the Third Mainland Bridge down to Falomo. We have put up streetlights and CCTV cameras. Whatever you are doing on that stretch of Falomo to the Third Mainland Bridge and the ramps, we are seeing you. It is on camera, and we are routing it to Abuja,” Umahi said.
Providing an update on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the minister announced that the first 30 kilometres of the project would be completed and inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu in May. He also explained that adjustments had been made to the route to reduce the number of buildings affected by demolitions.
