The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has pledged its commitment to end sexual and gender based violence in the Territory with the support and intervention of the Rule of Law and Anti Corruption (ROLAC) programme of the British Council.
The FCT Minister of State, Ramatu Tijjani-Aliyu, gave the commitment in Abuja when a response team of the Rule of Law and Anti Corruption (ROLAC) paid her a courtesy visit in her office.
Aliyu noted that gender and sexual based violence has become a troubling trend in the nation’s capital and other parts of the country which requires urgent policy and social action, even as she thanked other partners for their collaboration to end gender and sexual based violence in the country.
“We all must do our part to create a safe space for our citizens, our families especially our children. It is therefore an honour to communicate to you the strong pledge of the Federal Capital Territory Administration,” she stated.
Earlier, the Manager, Gender and Social Inclusion of ROLAC, Priscilla Ankut, revealed that plans have been concluded to officially launch sex offenders register and the establishment of Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARC) in Bwari and Wuse district hospitals on November 25, 2019.
She emphasized the need for improved access to justice for women, children and persons with disabilities at the federal and state level and the promotion of other laws and practices that facilitate access to justice for women who are sexually abused.
Ankut further explained that the development of the offenders register is to name and shame sexual offenders and to deter potential offenders, adding that besides the offenders register, there is a database of service providers, professionals and care-givers who citizens reporting sexual violence.
