Ahead of Saturday’s, February 21, 2026, Area Council elections in the nation’s capital, Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has declared Friday, February 20, a work-free day and announced a restriction of movement from 8pm Friday to 6pm Saturday.
In a statement issued by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, on Thursday in Abuja, Wike made the announcement during a special broadcast on national television and radio, urging residents to participate actively in the elections.
According to the statement, “On Saturday, we have a crucial opportunity to shape the future of the FCT. The election of new or returning Chairmen and Councilors for the six area councils is a significant event. I urge all residents to exercise their right to vote responsibly and orderly,” Wike said.

He added, “With the approval of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the work-free day is intended to enable residents to travel to their communities ahead of the polls. Security agencies have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the movement restriction.”
Wike also commended the President for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, calling it a step toward strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring transparent elections.

“Democracy is an evolving process. By continually reviewing the Electoral Act, we can improve our democratic system. I urge all FCT residents to make their voices heard and vote for candidates of their choice,” he added.
The Minister expressed optimism that the elections would produce quality leaders who will contribute to the development, peace, and prosperity of the FCT.
