The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has directed MultiChoice Nigeria to maintain its current subscription prices until an ongoing investigation into its proposed price hike is concluded.
This directive comes after MultiChoice Nigeria requested an extension regarding its scheduled appearance before the Commission. While the FCCPC granted the extension, the company is now required to attend a rescheduled investigative hearing on March 6, 2025, with all relevant officers and a comprehensive response.
The Commission has made it clear that MultiChoice must uphold its existing price structure as of February 27, 2025, pending a final decision. The move aims to prevent any potential harm to consumers while the investigation is ongoing.
The FCCPC’s action follows MultiChoice Nigeria’s formal notification of a planned subscription price increase set to take effect on March 1, 2025. The Commission has expressed concerns over the frequent and unilateral price hikes by the pay-TV provider, raising questions about potential market dominance abuse and anti-competitive practices in Nigeria’s broadcasting sector.
According to a statement signed by Ondaje Ijagwu, Director of Corporate Affairs at the FCCPC, the Commission is also engaging with the sector regulator and other relevant agencies to ensure a fair and competitive digital subscription landscape in Nigeria.
“The FCCPC is deeply concerned that Nigerian consumers continue to face frequent price increases, amid accusations that MultiChoice applies different pricing strategies in other markets, heightening questions about fairness and market abuse,” the statement read.
The Commission warned that if MultiChoice fails to provide a satisfactory explanation or is found in violation of fair market principles, it could face regulatory penalties, sanctions, or other corrective measures to safeguard consumer interests.
Further updates on the investigation will be provided as the situation develops.
