Experts at the just concluded Leadership Retreat hosted by ASIS International Chapter 206 Lagos in Abeokuta, Ogun State, have said that the solution to the insecurity in Nigeria lies in good governance by the country’s political leadership.
This year’s edition of the retreat which had as theme, ‘Hard & Soft Security: Addressing Threats with Focus on Human and National Development in Nigeria,’ focused on security, learning, camaraderie, and knowledge sharing.
Lucky Irabor, a Rtd General and immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, who was the keynote speaker at the event, called for a new approach to tackling insecurity, saying, “we must review our security strategies to adopt a human security perspective.
Good governance must be integrated into managing security. Physical security, which has garnered most attention, is only a part of the issue. The root causes of physical insecurity, which are linked to governance, awareness, national orientation, and education, need to be addressed.”
Joko Olanitori, chairperson of ASIS International Lagos Chapter 206, noted that beyond heavy national spending on physical security, addressing hunger and infrastructural deficits is essential. “If we ensure food security and improve infrastructure, the challenges of physical security will be easier to manage,” she added.
Adeniyi Adegbonmire, the guest speaker, advised that the various private security outfits or bodies in the country should unite under one umbrella organisation to present a common front capable of working with the nation’s legislative body to resolve operational issues.
The one-day retreat featured breakout sessions, health talks, golfing, and other games, as well as visits to the famous Olumo Rock in Abeokuta.
ASIS International Board member, Wilson Esangbedo, foundation member, Elizabeth Yakubu, Regional Vice President, Reuben Odum, Assistant Regional Vice President, Peter Okoloh, ASIS SARAC member Dr. Wale Adeagbo, Major General Adekunle Shodunke (Rtd) and many others.
