Enugu’s Works ministry urged to monitor old bridges, roads to avoid collapse

…Commissioner pledges quick response

Residents of Enugu State have drawn the attention of the state government to the dangers posed by cracked bridges and roads, urging immediate rehabilitation.

The call followed the recent collapse of a bridge at the new Artisan Market Enugu along Port-Harcourt-Enugu Expressway.

They particularly drew government’s attention to the flyover bridge across Nwoga Street/New Layout in Enugu metropolis, immediately after Holy Rosary College Fence, which they pointed out urgently needs urgent attention.

Gerald Otiji, Enugu State commissioner for works and infrastructure, when contacted on the danger posed by the flyover inside Enugu metropolis, said that the government would not hesitate to fix it.

“I will send engineers to go and ascertain the extent of the damage and report for immediate action.

“I am happy that my attention has been drawn to the flyover. I’ll send my engineers to assess the damage with a view to working on it. We don’t want what happened at New Artisan Bridge to happen to the flyover,” he said.

He also urged all residents to always draw government’s attention whenever they see danger signs.

“People should report to us such things so that as a responsive government, we shall do something immediately,” he said.
