Engineers urged to embrace emerging technologies

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has challenged professionals in the engineering sub-sector to embrace emerging technologies to improve and re-tool their skills for the future.

Aji Ezekiel Agbu, chairman of the Victoria Island branch of NSE, made this known during the 2024 Engineering Week, tagged, ‘Innovative leadership: Shaping the future of engineering’.

Agbu also reiterated the importance of having professional engineers in different engineering segments of the economy and insisted that engineering remains the pillar of the growth of any nation.

Speaking on the week-long activities, Agbu said the annual meeting/ election and induction of new corporate members would be held on Thursday, August 22, with 30 new corporate members joining the VI branch of the society.

He noted further that the functionality of every sector directly or indirectly depends on engineers and charged members to always be professionals in their dealings to avoid errors that could pose dangers to society.

“During our inauguration, we set professional development of members as part of our agenda; we will continue to provide our members with opportunities to learn and have professional growth,” he said.

Agbu also harped on the importance of retraining and exposing young engineers to global and latest digital techniques in the industry. He further appealed to members of the public to always engage certified and professional engineers for their projects.

Joan Nweke, the general secretary of the branch, said the society was keen on forward-thinking building engineers. She said the branch also wanted some members to see themselves as leaders of thought within their sphere of influence.

“Because it’s not just about ethical practices in engineering, it’s also about moral practices in communities; for you to take responsibility for your actions. This is also one of the things we plan to do during this engineering week,” Nweke said.
