The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has rolled out heightened nationwide security measures ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, as part of efforts to prevent attacks and ensure the safety of lives and property across the country.
The measures were announced on Sunday in a statement issued by Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, titled “Defence Headquarters Efforts to Ensure Safety and Security During the Christmas Festivities.”
According to the statement, the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), working in close collaboration with other security agencies, have intensified operations in areas identified as vulnerable to criminal activities during the festive season.

The DHQ said the move is aimed at proactively curbing threats and maintaining a peaceful environment as Nigerians travel and gather to celebrate.
It disclosed that additional troops have been deployed to strategic locations nationwide, including major highways and critical infrastructure.
He added that special forces units and air support elements have been placed on high alert to enable swift responses to any emerging security threats.
The statement further revealed that surveillance activities have been significantly strengthened, with increased aerial monitoring and enhanced intelligence-gathering operations.
These efforts, the DHQ said, are focused on tracking the movements and communication networks of suspected criminal groups to prevent planned attacks.
“Commanders across all theatres of operation have also been directed to step up ground patrols, establish fortified checkpoints, and maintain close coordination with community leaders, local vigilante groups and state security outfits”, it added.
This, according to the military, is to ensure a unified and effective security presence at the grassroots level.
Reaffirming the military’s commitment, the DHQ said the protection of Nigerians remains a top priority.
“As we approach this festive period, the Armed Forces of Nigeria reaffirm their unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians. The security and stability of our nation remain our top priority, and every necessary measure is being taken to ensure that citizens celebrate Christmas in peace, unity and joy,” he said.
The DHQ also stressed the importance of public cooperation, urging citizens to remain calm but vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest security formation.
It assured the public that all information provided would be treated with urgency and confidentiality.
The statement also conveyed a goodwill message from Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Defence Staff, who extended his Christmas and New Year wishes to Nigerians and called for continued support for the armed forces.
The Defence Headquarters further appealed to the media to widely disseminate the information, emphasising that collective vigilance and public support are critical to the success of ongoing security operations throughout the festive season.
