Bello Matawalle, minister of state for defence, has voiced deep concern over the recent violence in Osun State, which has led to the loss of lives in some local government councils.
In a statement signed by Iyogun Sunday on behalf of the director of information and public relations, Matawalle called on security agencies to intensify efforts to maintain peace and order in the state.
The Minister described the recent incidents as alarming and stressed the need for immediate action to prevent further escalation.
“As the Minister of State for Defence, my duty includes the protection of lives and properties of all citizens,” Matawalle stated, emphasizing the government’s responsibility to ensure public safety.
He highlighted that the recent developments underscore the importance of upholding democratic principles and the rule of law, values central to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“This situation should not be allowed to continue. It reflects the urgent need for proactive measures while reinforcing our administration’s commitment to justice, equity, and the rule of law,” he added.
Matawalle also urged political leaders, community stakeholders, and civil society groups to respect the rule of law and engage in constructive dialogue to restore peace in Osun State.
He stressed the importance of unity and collaboration in creating a stable environment necessary for the region’s progress and development.
Appealing for calm, Matawalle called on Osun State residents to avoid actions that could worsen tensions. He assured them that the federal government is committed to their safety, with security in the state already heightened.
“Maintaining peace is paramount, and we will support all efforts to achieve stability and harmony in the state,” he affirmed.
The Minister also reiterated the federal government’s dedication to protecting the democratic rights of all Nigerians and its continuous pursuit of a peaceful nation where justice and the rule of law prevail.
