A fresh crack has emerged within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State as former Ogun Central Senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, resigned from the ruling party, accusing its leadership of sidelining her contributions and disregarding the aspirations of her supporters after the party’s controversial governorship consensus process.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Obasanjo said her decision followed deep reflection and extensive consultations with political associates and supporters. She explained that although she joined the APC in good faith and worked diligently to strengthen its grassroots support, her experience during and after the governorship consensus exercise exposed what she described as a lack of internal democracy, fairness and respect within the party.
The former senator said the events surrounding the consensus arrangement left her disappointed and convinced that her efforts and sacrifices were not valued by the party leadership.
“Unfortunately, my experience during and after the consensus exercise left me with the painful realisation that my contributions, sacrifices and the aspirations of my supporters were not accorded the recognition and respect they deserved,” she stated.
Explaining the reason for her departure, Obasanjo quoted from her resignation letter to party leaders, saying: “When disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table.”
She noted that despite accepting the party’s consensus candidate in the interest of unity and cohesion, the concerns and expectations of her supporters were largely ignored. According to her, this ultimately influenced her decision to sever ties with the ruling party.
Obasanjo, however, expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other APC leaders in Ogun State for the courtesies extended to her during her membership of the party. She specifically thanked the Ogun State APC Chairman and the Ogun Central Senatorial Chairman, Chief Soremi, for their support and cooperation.
The former lawmaker reaffirmed her commitment to the principles of justice, fairness and good governance, stressing that her resignation from the APC would not diminish her dedication to the development of Ogun State and Nigeria.
She also expressed gratitude to her supporters for their loyalty and steadfast backing throughout her political journey, assuring them that she would continue to pursue causes that advance the interests of the people.
Obasanjo represented Ogun Central Senatorial District between 2007 and 2011 and remains a prominent figure in Ogun politics. She is the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Her exit marks another high-profile departure from the APC in Ogun State, where internal party rivalries and succession politics have continued to generate tensions ahead of future electoral contests.
